DevOps and SRE mock interview with a live AI panel
PanelPrep AI is voice-first interview practice with a live AI panel, and DevOps and SRE interviews test how you keep systems running when things go wrong. Expect Linux and networking fundamentals, CI/CD, containers and Kubernetes, infrastructure as code, monitoring, and incident response. Many questions are scenarios: something is broken, and the interviewer wants to hear how you debug it step by step.
The strongest candidates narrate their troubleshooting clearly: what they check first, why, and what each result rules out. That is hard to do under pressure unless you have practised it aloud. This page covers what the round tests, ten scenario and concept questions, a debugging approach, and the mistakes that make experienced engineers sound unsure. Pair it with hands-on practice in a small lab where you can break things safely.
What this round tests
- Linux and networking
- Processes, file systems, permissions, DNS, TCP and load balancers, and the tools to inspect each of them.
- CI/CD and releases
- Pipeline design, deployment strategies such as blue-green and canary, and safe rollbacks.
- Containers and orchestration
- Docker images, Kubernetes objects, scheduling and networking, and common failure states.
- Observability and reliability
- Metrics, logs and traces, SLIs, SLOs and error budgets, and alerts that point to real user impact.
- Incident response
- How you triage, mitigate first, communicate during an incident, and run a blameless postmortem.
Practice questions
Say each answer out loud and time yourself. Written answers hide the pauses and filler an interviewer hears.
- A website is returning 502 errors. Walk me through how you investigate.
- What happens, step by step, when you run curl against a URL?
- A pod is stuck in CrashLoopBackOff. How do you debug it?
- How would you design a CI/CD pipeline for a service that has a database?
- Explain the difference between a canary release and a blue-green deployment.
- A server's disk is full. How do you find the cause and fix it safely?
- What is the difference between an SLI, an SLO and an SLA?
- How do you manage secrets in pipelines and in Kubernetes?
- A Terraform plan shows it will destroy a production database. What do you do?
- Tell me about an incident you handled. What did the postmortem change?

How to structure your answer: Scope, mitigate, diagnose, prevent
- Establish scope: what is affected, since when, and what changed recently.
- If users are affected, mitigate first, for example by rolling back or shifting traffic, and say that you are doing so.
- Diagnose layer by layer, from DNS and network to load balancer, service and dependencies, saying what each check rules out.
- Confirm the root cause with evidence from logs, metrics or traces.
- Describe the fix and what you would add to prevent a repeat, such as an alert, a test or a runbook.
Common mistakes
- Jumping to a favourite cause instead of narrowing the problem down systematically.
- Debugging for a long time before mitigating the impact on users.
- Listing tools without explaining what each one tells you.
- Alerting on everything, with no link to user-facing symptoms or SLOs.
- Describing incidents in terms of who was to blame instead of what in the system and process failed.
FAQ
How does the AI panel run a DevOps or SRE interview?
Set the role and your stack, for example AWS with Kubernetes and Terraform, and PanelPrep AI's two voice interviewers run scenario questions calibrated to it. The peer interviewer adds complications as you debug, as a second panelist would. The report scores technical depth, correctness, communication and structure, and gives three next actions.
Do I need Kubernetes experience?
For most modern DevOps and SRE roles, some Kubernetes knowledge is expected. Be comfortable with pods, deployments, services, config maps, secrets, probes and resource limits, and know how to debug a failing pod. If you have not used it at work, run a small local cluster and practise deploying and breaking an app.
How should I prepare for scenario questions?
Write a checklist of layers and commands for common failures: high latency, 5xx errors, a full disk, high CPU, a failed deploy and DNS issues. Then practise talking through each scenario aloud, saying what you check and why. The narration is a large part of what interviewers are assessing.
What is the difference between DevOps and SRE interviews?
They overlap heavily. DevOps interviews lean towards CI/CD, automation and infrastructure as code. SRE interviews add more on reliability targets, capacity planning and incident management, and sometimes include coding or system design. Read the job description to see which way the role leans and weight your preparation accordingly.
